Published in the CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal), this new evidence-based guideline outlines 21 recommendations to increase environmental sustainability in Canadian operating rooms.
A multidisciplinary team of clinicians, administrators, environmental specialists and patient partners developed the guideline with funding from the Department of Surgery and the Collaborative Centre for Climate, Health and Sustainable Care at the University of Toronto. Recommendations range from reducing energy use by turning off lights and heating in ORs when not in use, to using reusable surgical devices and gowns, developing recycling programs, rethinking disposal of unused supplies and older devices, and more.
