Three Collaborative Centre members, Dr. Remziye Zaim, Dr. Jay Shaw, and Dr. Ross Upshur recently co-authored the article Planetary Health Research Ethics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: Environmental, Governance, and Epistemic Dimensions, published in the American Journal of Bioethics. The article examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping planetary health research ethics by expanding its focus beyond individual research practices to include the governance of the extractive infrastructures that underpin research. This includes the technical infrastructures through which research is conducted, the institutions that govern them, and the knowledge practices they enable. Zaim et al., argue that the central ethical challenge is not only to make research more environmentally sustainable, but also to govern the infrastructures that determine how environmental burdens and benefits are distributed across research ecosystems and health systems.
