TJ Theivendram is a second-year MSc student in the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology at the University of Toronto. Under the supervision of Dr. Bendeck, his research focuses on smooth muscle cell behaviour in vascular disease, particularly atherosclerosis and restenosis. He investigates how extracellular cues influence smooth muscle cell migration, proliferation, and phenotypic switching, processes central to vascular remodeling and disease progression. His work aims to uncover mechanisms that could inform strategies for improving cardiovascular health outcomes.
Beyond his research, TJ has mentored undergraduate trainees, contributed to collaborative projects, and gained clinical experience in medical laboratories and clinics. These experiences have strengthened his interest in bridging biomedical research with broader healthcare challenges. He is particularly motivated by the intersection of healthcare and sustainability, exploring how research and clinical practice can contribute to more preventative, efficient, and sustainable approaches to health. As an aspiring physician, TJ is committed to applying these principles in both his research and future clinical work.
