Saskia van Beers is an MASc student in her second year of studies in the Engineering Education program in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. Her research interests lie at the intersection of biomedical engineering, engineering design, education, and culture and equity studies. She is passionate about improving health equity and access to sustainable and social care. Previous involvement with Medical Herstory led her to explore the role of storytelling in improving equitable access to healthcare for gender-marginalized communities. She currently serves as a biology lead for the Discovery Outreach program, as a tutorial instructor for multiple first-year engineering design courses, and as a peer support volunteer with the Durham Rape Crisis Centre, where she works to broaden normative definitions of health and care.
