Gabrielle Wong is a Master of Arts student in Geography at the University of Toronto, supervised by Dr. Mike Ekers. Gabrielle’s research broadly focuses on the the politics of climate action, particularly the implications of environmental crises for human and non-human wellbeing. Their thesis project is about the potential benefits and harms of a forest-based carbon offset program based in Vancouver Island, including its implications for Indigenous land rights.
They are also a research assistant for a project funded by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions about building community climate resilience in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities. The project seeks to understand how rural and remote communities in British Columbia are building climate resilience and is advocating for policy, technical, and system changes that support community-based climate initiatives. Outside of university, Gabrielle has prior volunteer and work experience related to social determinants of health for older adults and youth climate anxiety.
