Ethics & Resilience Grand Rounds: Climate Research, Health Systems, and Climate Change

Jeff D’Souza, Research Scientist, McMaster Centre for Climate Change

Health systems across Canada are beginning to tackle their carbon footprint associated with delivering high quality care. In their quest to build net-zero health systems, difficult ethical decisions will need to be made, many related to patient and family care. In this presentation, I examine one activity taking place across health systems – namely, clinical research – and explore how we might conduct it in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable way.

In this presentation, we will:

  1. Unpack the challenge and efforts undertaken to address the carbon footprint of health systems in Canada and beyond;
  2. Examine the importance of reducing carbon emissions in health research as part of a broader commitment to delivering net-zero health systems; and
  3. Highlight specific initiatives and strategies that empower health systems to conduct clinical research in a more environmentally friendly and sustainable manner, while enhancing patient and family care.
