Dr. Ivy Cheng has been affiliated with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center since 1999 and is currently a staff emergency physician, clinician investigator, patient flow lead and the emergency department (ED) director of research and scholarly activities. She is an Associate Professor at University of Toronto, Associate Scientist at Sunnybrook Research Institute, Affiliate at Monash (Australia) and Örebro University (Sweden). She is Canadian, American, and Australian board certified. She also practices sports medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Midtown (Toronto) and has a Masters in Mountain Medicine from the University of Leicester. Ivy completed her doctorate in ED crowding at the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden and her post-doctorate at Örebro University. Focusing on improving older person care in the emergency department, she was a 2017-19 Health System Impact Fellow through CIHR. Her current research, leadership and clinical roles focus on improving ED patient care by addressing ED crowding, high frequency ED users, vulnerable populations, such as older persons, and the pandemic’s impact. With respect to climate health, she has worked in the polar regions and mountains and has witnessed the retreat of ice sheets and glaciers. She has been a clinical advisor with the Canadian Climate Institute on the impact of the heat wave on British Columbia’s emergency services in 2021.
