Pharmaceuticals and the Environment

Pharmaceuticals produce significant environmental impacts throughout their lifecycle, including the production of greenhouse gas emissions, chemical pollution, and plastics pollution. The safe use of pharmaceuticals is also affected by climate change, as is reliable supply.

The expertise that already exists within the Collaborative Centre community, the significance of these environmental impacts, and the pressing need for global, equitable access to essential medicines as a means to achieve Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals, makes pharmaceuticals and the environment a priority area of research focus.

Led by Dr. Zubin Austin, Dean Lisa Dolovich, and Centre Administrator Annalise Mathers, the centre equips students and practitioners with the skills and confidence to move science and health forward through the best use of medications and to give patients the best possible care. With its large and growing network of pharmacy professionals in the community, institutions, industry, government, and regulation, CPE has enormous capacity to influence climate conscious pharmacy practice, including through research and knowledge mobilization.

Led by Dr. Quinn Grundy, Bloomberg Nursing, this centre is charged with conducting research, analysis, and training on critical issues related to governance in the public interest, transparency, and accountability in the pharmaceutical sector. The WHO Collaborating Centre brings a distinctive expertise to bear that highlights the role of the multinational pharmaceutical industry and the economic and commercial determinants of health in addressing health, climate and sustainability issues.
