Cecil Chikezie is a healthcare systems and human factors researcher whose work focuses on patient safety, organizational resilience, and systems improvement within complex healthcare environments. Using operating-room video analysis, clinician interviews, and data-driven methods, he studies how surgical teams identify safety threats and how they prevent, adapt to, and recover from operational challenges. His research spans multiple hospitals, including North York General Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, St. Michael’s Hospital, and Stanford Health Care, offering insight into how different organizational contexts shape safety and resilience practices.
As a Sustainability Catalyst Researcher at the University of Toronto, Cecil researches and benchmarks sustainability prioritization practices in healthcare and the public sector. He developed a practical evaluation framework – weighing impact, feasibility, cost, risk, equity, and strategic alignment – to help leadership sequence sustainability initiatives into a phased implementation roadmap.
Cecil is currently pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. He holds a Master of Engineering in Bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a Mastercard Foundation Scholar, and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi. Alongside his research, he contributes to STEM education and mentorship through programs at the University of Toronto and the Toronto District School Board, and he is fluent in English, French, and Swahili.
